He wants too much money. Four years at $40 million is too much for somebody who pitched well in a few playoff games. GM Omar Minaya remembers that he was 3-10 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 starts with the Angels before he was designated for assignment.

And, while the Mets and Yankees are different animals, Minaya is wary of him pitching in New York, and is considering free agents Tomo Ohka and Tony Armas. Neither is clear cut better than the Mets' current options.

Jan. 05: Yankees would do well to dump Johnson

There is a possibility Randy Johnson is healthy in 2007 and has a great year. Wouldn't that make him a No. 3 or No. 4 quality starter? And, that could be enough to fill out the rotation.

There's no question Weaver didn't handle things well emotionally while with the Yankees, but that was four years ago and people can change. Remember, it wasn't so much New York, as it was in dealing with all that nonsense with George Steinbrenner.

I covered the Yankees at the time and Steinbrenner publicly ripped Weaver and chose Jose Contreras over him. Steinbrenner made it impossible to Weaver to succeed here because he let it be known he wanted Contreras. His preference with Contreras had nothing to do with ability at the time, but everything to do with justifying winning the bidding war with the Red Sox over him.

New York can be an intimidating place, but Weaver wasn't flustered in October. And, don't forget, pitching for the Yankees and Steinbrenner is different than pitching for the Mets. It's New York, but it's still different.

Weaver could be worth the gamble, but not at four years and $40 million.

Jan. 04: Hope you're all doing well

I hope you all had a great Holiday season. Got an email from the Mets, pitchers and catchers report on the 15th. Hotel reservations for the season about done. Time to book spring training flight. It will be here before you know it.

Took in ``We are Marshall,'' the other night. Very well done. It could have been overdone but it wasn't. ``The Good Shepherd,'' by the way lost me. There were too many holes in it. Too many unanswered questions. I was expecting a lot more.

We're re-designing the blog. The new version should be out shortly. Mostly design stuff. I hope you'll like it.

My gut feeling on the Mets, by the way, is what you see is what you get for spring training. I can't see them doing anything major between now and Port St. Lucie. Assuming that's the case, how do you feel about that? Are you confident with what the Mets have now?

Dec. 29: Was there a second plan in place?

The question has been raised, and rightfully so: Did the Mets have a Plan B or was it all about Zito?

It's hard to believe Omar Minaya would have gone into the offseason that shortsighted. Yeah, they talked trade for Freddy Garcia. Yeah, they talked trade with Oakland. Yeah, they looked at Jeff Suppan. Yeah, they inquired into a few others.

So, I can't say it was all Zito. However, all their passion was for Zito. They never really went after anybody with intensity. If they had, it stands to reason with their resources they would have come away with another pitcher.

If there was a miscalculation by the Mets, it was the market price for Zito, but that only puts them in the same boat as everybody else. The Mets' gamble was to let the market come to them, figuring they had more to offer than Texas.

Nobody, the Mets included, thought Zito would get $126 million over seven years. Considering the limit they wanted to spend, with the benefit of hindsight, they should have been more aggressive early in the market and signed a replacement for Steve Trachsel (they needed to replace 15 wins) and perhaps put more pressure on Tom Glavine.

Even so, they are better off going into the season with inexperience at the back end of their rotation than to be saddled with a bad contract.

Dec. 29: Thinking of Bobby

I hope you'll include Bobby Murcer in your thoughts and prayers for a speedy and complete recovery. GM Omar Minaya has gotten a lot of high marks from a lot of you, but this might be one of his better decisions. To tell ownership not to cave in on the years, even though the Mets probably have the resources, was the responsible thing to do.

Seven years is way too much for a pitcher, and despite Barry Zito's durability history, I'm willing to bet he won't have a breakdown or two, or maybe more, during this contract. The Mets are going into next season with a questionable rotation, but that's far better than possibly going into the next seven years hamstrung.

The remaining free agent market is thin, with Jeff Weaver maybe the best available. The rest? Tony Armas Jr., Russ Ortiz, Mark Redman and Tomo Ohka, not to mention Steve Trachsel.

There's not much available in the trade market either. They looked at Javier Vazquez, but with the White Sox already dealing Freddy Garcia and Brandon McCarthy, they won't deal a third starter.

Don't look for the with Oakland for either Dan Haren, Joe Blanton and Rich Harden to be revived. The A's wanted a lot then - Lastings Milledge, Aaron Heilman and Phil Humber - but with the market even thinner now, they aren't likely to back off those demands.

Dec. 28: The leaves say San Francisco

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Word is Barry Zito just agreed to terms with the Giants on a seven-year, $126 million contract, which just goes to show Scott Boras is leading a charmed life. That's roughly two years and $51 million more than the Mets wanted to pay.

One team is enough. Boras won't be intimidated by a deadline. I don't expect Boras to cave and grab the Rangers' offer, without first giving the Mets and the other players a chance to beat it. Given that, the Mets will have a safety net.

If Boras doesn't bite on the Rangers, that narrows the field for the Mets. Then it's only San Francisco and Seattle. I would worry more about the Giants because they have some flexibility with Bonds getting a lot of his salary deferred, and with Jason Schmidt and Moises Alou gone.

Plus, the Giants are a Coastal team as Zito wants, and he doesn't have to leave home.

Dec. 27: A Zito stat to remember

Here's something the Mets should consider before throwing millions of dollars at Barry Zito.

His career record is 102-63, which is 39 games over .500. Pretty good.

However, his record over the past four years is only nine games over .500, which you'd take from a No. 4 or No. 5 pitcher. It is not what you would expect from a supposed ace.

Dec. 27: Let the guessing begin

A federal appeals court ruled this afternoon government investigators are entitled to names and urine samples of nearly 100 players who tested positive in 2003. Undoubtedly, the names will soon be leaked to the media and it should be an interesting summer.

The samples were collected by MLB to ascertain the level of steroid use and were to remain confidential. However, the court rejected the agreement between MLB and the Players Association.

It is believed since these positive tests were prior to MLB's substance abuse policy that there won't be suspensions. In short, we're not going to see 100 players suspended during the season.

Dec. 27: Remember him?

I just scanned the list of available free agents and I noticed Steve Trachsel's name. They have not, but the Texas Rangers did, saying they want something done by this weekend.

In an email to the The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, owner Tom Hicks wrote: ``We've made a very strong offer. If we don't have agreement with his agent by this weekend, we will pursue other alternatives.''

Evidently, the Rangers fear the Yankees getting involved. If the Mets really want Zito, they should have the same fear. The only way Zito gets $100 million is in a bidding war, and the way to avoid that is to force Boras to a deal before the Yankees become an issue.

But the Mets have to play this carefully. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, and right now Boras only has one offer. If the Mets fear losing Zito to the Rangers, they should make a take it or leave it offer now. If not, and they believe Zito wants to come to them, they should wait out the deadline, then make one of their own.

Dec. 26: Time for the Mets to issue deadline

The more I think about it, and the more I read, the less I am inclined to think the Yankees are interested in Barry Zito, even if they unload Randy Johnson. Again, if the Yankees really want him, they have the money to get this done right now.

Meanwhile, the Mets are either dragging their feet or playing chicken with Scott Boras.

Jeff Suppan is off the market, which takes away an option, but even without that, the Mets seem to hold most of the leverage. Reportedly, the Giants and Seattle are interested, but neither has made an offer, and neither want to give six years for a pitcher. No other teams have been mentioned, but then again do a roll call and see what teams are willing to pay that much.

Right, not many.

If I'm the Mets, I put my best offer on the table now and say ``take it or leave it.'' If Zito really wants the Mets, he'll come. As of now, Boras hasn't been able to play one team against another, and there's no guarantee he'll be able to entice the Yankees. If the market is coming to the Mets, they should push the envelope now.

Dec. 26: The Zito and Johnson scenario

If the Yankees are successful in dumping Randy Johnson (give GM Brian Cashman kudos if he does) and they make a run at Barry Zito, they will get him. The Yankees have the resources not only to make an offer, but take the hit if it doesn't work out.

The Yankees, however, have given no indication they want Zito.

With Texas trading for Brandon McCarthy and Jeff Suppan off the board, the Mets have appeared as front runners for Zito. However, for a team in dire need of pitching, they don't seem that aggressive. If they are waiting for the market to drop and Zito to come to them, that's a gamble.

The Mets say they are serious about Zito, but they've dragged their feet. The last thing they needed was to get in a bidding war for him with the Yankees.

Dec. 26: Back to work

Greetings ...

I hope you all enjoyed the Holidays. The Mets were quiet over the weekend and figure to be slow this week, also. That's not to say things haven't happened. Texas acquired pitcher Brandon McCarthy from the White Sox and Jeff Suppan is off the board, headed for Milwaukee. Both impact the landscape for Barry Zito, in favor of the Mets.

Rangers GM Jon Daniels said, ``I'm not terribly encouraged,'' when asked about Zito, and, obviously, not having Suppan available has to put the focus on Zito.

Meanwhile, the Yankees would like to trade Randy Johnson, and if they can, that frees up money to go after Zito without adding to their luxury tax bill. Then again, if the Yankees were really interested, nothing would stop them.

Dec. 23: Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all

Thanks for the well wishes. If the Mets are serious about Jeff Suppan they'd better hurry. Milwaukee made a four-year offer this afternoon, thought to be around $10 million a season.

Here is a telling comment from Brewers' GM Doug Melvin: ``My gut feeling is, they're going to wait until Zito.'' Melvin could be miscalulating, but what if he's not? If their interest in Suppan is sincere, they'd better move. If it was only for leverage in the Zito negotiations, then their bluff has been called by a third party. Once Suppan goes off the market, it will drive the price for Zito.

Suppan, 31, was 12-7 with a 4.12 ERA for St. Louis last season. He had a 0.60 ERA in two starts against the Mets in the NLCS and was MVP.

Dec. 21: Mets in the Morning: Suppan a back end option?

The Mets' Zito Posse is home, and it is unlikely they've made an offer. They are digesting Boras' salary demands, which we know will be excessive.

Jeff Suppan is the best FA pitcher left on the market other than Zito, so it makes sense the Mets would check him out. He's a little better than .500 lifetime, which would make him an ideal No. 4 or No. 5 starter. He had a good playoff run, so you know he's able to pitch under pressure.

The back end of the Mets' rotation was a mess last season, and Suppan would provide expensive stability. That's the key. More often than not he'll provide quality, which translates to at least six innings. Where that is important is in preserving bullpen innings.

Dec. 20: Is it always the money?

I wrote, that it is always the money, and despite several posts in disagreement, I stand by that. Yes, there are other reasons why a player would leave a team as a free-agent. Among them:

1. A chance to play fulltime, but playing fulltime over part time would always entail a bump in pay. How could it not?
2. A chance to play at home at the end of one's career. Well, that's what Andy Pettitte said. But, for a couple of million more - even though he already is set for two lifetimes - he's leaving Houston again.
3. Leaving a bad situation. What's a bad situation? Not enough money? Not playing fulltime? Playing a position you don't want? All these reasons could prompt a player to leave, but I'd bet they'd suck it up and stay if the money were right.

Maybe I'm too jaded, but few players pass on the money. Cal Ripken and Kirby Puckett gave up more on the open market to stay home, but they were exceptions and special players. Both achieved icon status in their cities and had other avenues of revenue for staying home.

I'm talking the routine free-agent, and in the end money talks loudest.

Dec. 20: Mets contingent heading home

The Mets' delegation had productive talks with Scott Boras and Barry Zito, which is to say they'll talk again. In case Zito falls through, or to give Boras something to think about, they also spoke with the agents for Mark Mulder and Jeff Suppan.

The Rangers say they have not offered Zito a $100-million package, but that doesn't mean they won't later. The Mets' parameters are five years and $73 million. After talking with Boras they could bump that up, but by how much we don't know yet.

Dec. 20: Mets, Zito talks

The Mets and agent Scott Boras are talking today in LA. The Giants and Seattle are believed to have had discussions with Boras at the winter meetings, but nothing formal since. It stands to reason if they have interest they'll be some sort of meeting, which means it doesn't get done this week.

After that come the offers.

As of now, the Mets haven't made one but are discussing parameters. They like five years and $73 million; Boras is thinking six and $100 million.

Anything over three years is a considerable risk for a pitcher. The Yankees did it with Mike Mussina and weren't burned, even though he had a few DL stints. There was nothing blowout major with Mussina, which is always the fear.

Since Zito is single, it stands to reason he'll take an apartment in the city he plays in, including Manhattan, so scouting the town isn't as much a priority. David Wright can always get him a unit in his building. It has been reported Zito wants to play in a major city, preferrably on one of the coasts.

This precludes the Rangers, but if the priority is a big city, presumably with a night life, then Dallas is right there. You don't think he can't hook up with a Cowboys cheerleader or model in Big D?

The Rangers are reportedly more willing to go closer to the magic $100 million figure than the Mets. If there's a $25 million difference in the offers, why wouldn't he take the money and go with the Rangers?

Please, don't say anything about having the best chance to win. That's a lot of smoke. If that were the case, he'd stay in Oakland, which has been pretty much a playoff fixture, with more October appearances over the past five years than any of the other teams interested, including the Mets.

Remember: IN THE END IT IS ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY.

Dec. 19: Meeting again in the morning

Went out to dinner tonight with friends, and halfway through somebody asked me, ``I have to ask you something.'' Before he got his question out I said, ``I don't know if they are going to get Zito or not, but if they want him they can get him.'' Point being, if the Mets want to spend Zito is theirs.

The Mets have the resources, but Texas has the history of caving when it comes to dealing with Scott Boras. I know the Mets don't want to go as high as $100 million, but I have a feeling will take something in that neighborhood to get it done.

They met today and will talk again tomorrow. That's when they'll talk money. Boras wants six guaranteed, and the Mets prefer four, but could go to five. They might get around this by offering option years. They have the money now, and will definitely have no problem at the end of the contract, regardless of the length, because of their new stadium and the naming rights.

Dec. 18: Mets to meet Boras tomorrow

It's on. Mets VP Jeff Wilpon, GM Omar Minaya and executives Tony Bernanzard and John Ricco will fly to LA tomorrow to meet with Scott Boras and Barry Zito. They'll talk tomorrow, have dinner, then talk again Wednesday.

I would think if Zito were really interested, there would be a trip to NY to scout out homes. It's one thing to come here as a traveling player and stay in hotel. It's another to come here looking for a place to live for five or six years.

So, how should the Mets play this? Should they go back and forth with Boras or should they put their best offer on the table right away and say take it or leave it?

Dec. 18: New stadium update

To monitor the progress of the Mets new ballpark, go to StadiumPage.com.

Dec. 18: Mets to meet Zito this week

GM Omar Minaya said he'll have a sit-down with agent Scott Boras and Barry Zito sometime this week. When? We could know that some time to day. Again, a meeting. Maybe a day or two. Perhaps an offer. Boras to use that offer vs. Texas. Maybe a counter.

Count me surprised if it gets done this week. And, I don't see it happening X-Mas/New Years week. Logic says early January.

What I can see happening is Minaya re-visiting the trade market, if for no other reason that to tell Boras he has other options.

Other than that, there's nothing pressing with the Mets. They might tinker with their bench, but nothing substantial on the horizon.

Dec. 17: Zito meeting imminent; deal not

The Mets are sure to meet with Barry Zito this week. Probably early. Even after they meet, I can't see a signing this week. The Mets might make an offer, but Scott Boras will play the teams against each other. As of now, the Mets, Texas and San Francisco have stated an interest. The Giants' might be more able to make a deal with Barry Bonds deferring a large part of his salary.

If three teams are interested, one week isn't enough time to get it all done. My guess is still in January.

Dec. 15: The way one must look at Pedro

Both Omar Minaya and Willie Randolph said getting Pedro Martinez back late in the second half would be like making a deal at the trade deadline. Make sense in theory, but only if you can guarantee a half-season of quality starts. Neither would.

The Mets aren't saying it, but they must look at Martinez as a non-entity in 2007. They can't plan on one win out of him, much less eight or nine. That has to be one of the variables they'll weigh when they consider how much they might offer Barry Zito.

As it is now, the Mets have two proven starters in their rotation, and both of them are 40-plus. There is no track record for John Maine, Dave Williams, Oliver Perez or Mike Pelfrey. At least none that suggests you can pencil in 30-plus starts and 15-plus wins.

Dec. 15: Mets in the Morning

Looks as if it will be a quiet day.

Team trying to set something up with Barry Zito before next week. This figures to drag into January. Zito visits sometime next week. He gets an offer. Scott Boras won't take it. He'll play the offer against Texas. Then maybe Zito visits San Francisco or Seattle. Don't expect anything Christmas week. That takes us into January.

Dec. 14: Ranking the GM's

Mets GM Omar Minaya placed third and the Yankees' Brian Cashman ranked fifth in an ESPN poll ranking the 30 general managers.

Speaking on a conference call this morning, Damon said Zito: ``I think he'd adjust well. He doesn't let much phase him.''

Damon also described his former Oakland teammate as a big-game pitcher. ``He knows how to pitch in the postseason,'' Damon said.

With the Matsuzaka deal done, agent Scott Boras will turn his attention to Zito, whose only offer so far comes from Texas. San Francisco also has interest, and with Barry Bonds saying he would defer much of his $16 million 2007 contract, the Giants might be able to make a serious run at Zito.

Dec. 13: Look at the eyes

1. Tom Glavine: 40 plus, throws soft.
2. Orlando Hernandez: 40 plus, junkballer.
3. John Maine: little more than half a season experience.
4. Oliver Perez: a few good moments; a few bad ones last year.

The most important number there if you're thinking about relating this to Barry Zito is the six years.

The Mets don't want to go that long, prefering instead to go shorter with option years at the end, but Boras wants six guaranteed. If he can get it from somebody who has never pitched in the major leagues he no doubt thinks he'll get it for Zito, who has long been an innings eater.

Dec. 13: Omar: ``Mets in it for Zito''

Mets GM Omar Minaya, speaking at the Mets annual holiday party, said the team is in it for Barry Zito if the deal ``makes sense.'' The Rangers are the only team believed to have made an offer, and it's reportedly over $100 million. San Francisco and Seattle aren't really the players they led one to believe. So right now it's Mets and Texas.

Minaya said things should heat up after the Daisuke Matsuzaka negotiations are completed in Boston. It looks like it will get done if it hasn't already. Colorado sent Jason Jennings and pitcher Miguel Asencio today for outfielder Willy Taveras and pitchers Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh. Meanwhile, Seattle will sign Arizona free-agent Miguel Batista on a three-year, $24-million deal pending a physical.

The Mets began the offseason with a stated need for pitching, but so far this winter the following pitchers have gone elsewhere: Jason Schmidt, Freddy Garcia, Ted Lilly, Gil Meche, Jennings and Batista. And, of course, Andy Pettitte.

They have until midnight to do so.

Zambrano never has endeared himself to Mets fans because he came at the cost of Kazmir.

Zambrano blew out his elbow in a May 6 game against the Braves. Three times during a trip to the mound Willie Randolph asked him if he was hurting and three times Zambrano said no. Two pitches later he ran off the mound. He underwent Tommy John surgery in a week later and has been rehabbing in Venezuela since.

The Mets' offer has to be at least $2.4 million, which is 80 percent of the three million he made last year.

The Mets are doing this not because they think Zambrano is the answer if they don't get Barry Zito, but at $2.4 million he's worth the gamble.

Dec. 12: Matsuzaka clarification

I wrote yesterday if the D-Mat negotiations fell through his rights could fall to the team that's next in line.

That's true, but I don't want to mislead you so I must stress how highly unlikely this would be. It's like the seventh tiebreaker in the NFL playoff system. It's there, but you're not going to see it.

Why is this unlikely?

* The burden of proof would be on the commissioner's office to prove the negotiations were not proper.

* Everybody wants this to work, and while the posting process has flaws, they are worth it to keep the working agreement going. An investigation would damage the working relationship, and theoretically cost MLB millions in marketing in Japan.

However, according to the Japanese-American agreement, if commissioner Bud Selig has reason to believe the negotiating process was compromised, or if he believes the Red Sox negotiated in bad faith, he has the authority claiming the ``Best Interest in Baseball,'' clause to award the rights to the next team in line.

While this is highly unlikely, the avenue, although remote, does exist that could enable the next team in line, which reportedly is the Mets, to have a crack.

Here's the link to this agreement: http://jpbpa.net/convention/2001_e.pdf (Paragraph 13)

All sides want this to happen by Thursday's deadline and here's why:

* The Red Sox obviously want the pitcher.
* D-Mat wants to play in the US, and it's up to agent Scott Boras to make it happen.
* The Japanese market is rich in potential clients for Boras, and he doesn't want to jeopardize that by not letting this deal happen.
* MLB obviously wants a deal in the interest of peace and maintaining its relationship with Japan.

Dec. 12: Zito v. Matsuzaka

Scott Boras represents Barry Zito and Daisuke Matsuzaka, which is why their negotiations are strategically linked. Zito isn't going to get done this week because Boras is tied up with the D-Mat negotiations with the Red Sox, which have a Thursday midnight deadline.

It stands to reason Boras doesn't want to finish Zito until after D-Mat, because Matsuzaka would help to justify his asking price for Zito. If he can get closer to the $14 million a year he's asking for Matsuzaka, who has never thrown a pitch in the major leagues, then what's a guy like Zito worth?

And, with Freddy Garcia, Ted Lilly, Jason Schmidt and Gil Meche off the market, the scarcity for pitching becomes even more acute. That drives the price for Zito.

The Mets are saying the won't match Texas at $102 million for six-years, or even how close they would approach it. They are saying they are happy with whom they have, but you'd expect them to say that and not appear desperate. As of now, there are no plans to bring in Zito.

But, there's time.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://metslohud.blogspot.com/2006/12/dec-12-zito-v-matsuzaka.html' title='Dec. 12: Zito v. Zito is supposed to be in the NYC for a charity function, but his agent, Scott Boras, is currently wrapped up in the Matsuzaka negotiations with Boston. The deadline is Thursday midnight.

Omar Minaya returned to New York this afternoon after a scouting tour of the Dominican Republic.

Dec. 11: Oliver agrees to deal with Angels

Mets free-agent lefty reliever Darren Oliver reached agreement with the Los Angeles Angels on a one-year contract for $3.5 million with an option for 2008. Oliver was 4-1 with a 3.44 ERA in 45 games.

Although he played a big role for the Mets, there were no plans to re-sign him, with the club's thinking that Dave Williams could fill that slot.

Oliver is 91-80 record in 13 seasons with Texas, St. Louis, Boston, Colorado, Florida, Houston and the Mets.

Dec. 11: Matsuzaka update

Should the Daisuke Matsuzaka negotiations with Boston fall apart and MLB deems the Red Sox dealt in bad faith in trying to sign the Japanese pitcher in the attempt to block him from going to the Yankees, the bidding could fall to next in line in the bidding, which would be the Mets.

MLB would have to investigate a complaint, but who would initiate it?

The primary wounded party would be Matsuzaka, who would lose out on a potential deal. Reportedly, the Red Sox are offering $7 million, and assuming four years, that's $28 million. Add that to the $51 million bid for the rights to talk and we're talking $79 million for a pitcher who has never thrown a pitch.

If the Red Sox were bluffing just to keep him from another team, who is to say Scott Boras wouldn't force them to show their cards. If Boras said, ``we'll take it,'' then the Red Sox would be out $79 million for a pitcher they didn't want. That's a huge gamble, which makes the bad faith argument by the Red Sox unlikely.

If this falls through, Matsuzaka could post again next winter. Should that not work, he would be a free-agent (the way Hideki Matsui came to the Yankees) in 2008 and be allowed to talk to any team.

More likely is Boras is holding out for the bucks and using the deadline as leverage to up the ante because there are no competing teams. There are too many people with something to gain here, which is why I think this should eventually get done.

Dec. 11: Mets release spring training sked

Someone with pop would be nice for the late innings.

Dec. 10: This is how Boras plays it

The Boston Herald reported negotiations between the Red Sox and Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka have broken down and he might not sign by Thursday's midnight deadline.

It's not the last minute yet, so don't be surprised if this still gets done. The Red Sox put a $51 million deposit for the right to negotiate, so they want to get this done. Matsuzaka has already gone through the posting process, he has bid farewell to Japan. He's not going to want to go through this again next year.

Reports are agent Scott Boras is the cause for the snag. However, dragging out negotiations to get the last dollar is what Boras does. There's no other team he can use against the Red Sox as leverage, so he's using the deadline.

That's something that has to be remembered in the bidding for Barry Zito. He has one offer on the table, and that's from Texas. The Mets are interested, but so is San Francisco and possibly Seattle. We're not at the point yet of teams bidding against each other.

All this means Zito signing isn't imminent.

Dec. 09: Reyes barred from winter ball

While in the Dominican Republic today, Mets GM Omar Minaya visited Jose Reyes and prohibited him from playing winter ball with the Cibao Gigantes.

``Reyes is an important part of our team,'' said Minaya. ``That's why the Mets' organization decided that he will not play. We want him to keep healthy for the next season.''

Wise move. Reyes was prone to injuries early in his career, and after his breakout year last summer they need to protect their investment.

Dec. 08: Pettitte goes home - again?

I've always liked Andy Pettitte. He's been one of my favorite players to cover. A true gentleman. When he stinks he admits it. When he's great he has a sense of humility. He's one of the good guys.

That said, c'mon Andy, time for a reality check.

In making his decision to come back to the zoo, he said, ``It's been a brutal several days trying to come to this decision.''

Brutal? It's brutal to face the choice between $16 million and $12 million? And, his agent Randy Hendricks said they would have taken $14 million to stay.

Can Roger be that far behind?

Dec. 08: Humber damaged goods, too

I've had a lot of posts saying Rich Harden's injury history makes it a gamble to give up Phil Humber. According to my intinerary, I should have been home last night.

I'm in Detroit. Delayed last night until I missed connection and had to spend another night in Orlando. Missed connection this morning here and won't get home until tonight. Since ``it's not our fault,'' there is no sense of wanting to put me on another carrier. Not a whole lot of cooperation from the airlines, but then again, I wasn't expecting much. Pleased to have a loaded iPod and DVDs of the first season of Hogan's Heroes. Mick Jagger and Sgt. Schultz have kept me busy in between phone calls to agents.

Willie Randolph visited a couple of hospitals in the city, but no word yet on if Barry Zito plans to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Dec. 08: Minaya ahead of contract curve

When you look at some of the deals already in the offseason, one has to give GM Omar Minaya kudos for taking the initiative this summer with the extensions for David Wright or Jose Reyes.

If Julio Lugo is worth $36 million over four years, then what is Reyes worth? Certainly more than the $23.25 million he signed for. And Wright's $55 million is also a bargain - compared to JD Drew!?!

He said the Rangers are in it, but have their financial limits. What they are, he won't say, but indicated the six years and $102 million being mentioned are close. He said owner Tom Hicks has been burned and won't go crazy.

To me, however, those numbers are already crazy for a pitcher four years removed from his best season.

GM Omar Minaya said he wouldn't specify his parameters. ``I've been burned before when I've done that,'' Minaya said. ``I don't want to get locked in.''

Word is Zito prefers the nightlife of a big city to Arlington. Evidently, he's not a geography major. Dallas is 15 minutes away.

Some Met officials are saying the five years and $73 million they were willing to give Roy Oswalt is their limit, but in reality that's where they will start.

Minaya said he has not been given any assurances by Boras that the Mets would get a chance to match any offer.

Dec. 07: Updating Oakland talks

I am aware of Danny Haren. The Mets made inquiries about him, Rich Harden and Joe Blanton, but so far have been rebuffed by A's GM Billy Beane.

``We're talking. Nothing is imminent with anybody,'' Beane told me today after the Rule 5 draft.

Harden does have an injury history, but the current reports on him are clean. That history is a red flag, but he also has more of an upside than Haren or Blanton.

GM Omar Minaya said he has no untouchables, but that doesn't mean there aren't those he would prefer to keep. Phil Humber and Mike Pelfrey are among them. However, it would cost Humber to get Harden. But, maybe not for the other two.

That doesn't mean Beane won't ask.

You have to look at both sides, and looking at it from the Oakland perspective, is 1) it will lose Barry Zito and will need to replace him in the rotation; 2) all three of the pitchers the Mets are looking at are young, good and don't make a lot of money.

Given that, there's no compelling reason for Beane to want to trade any of them unless he gets what he wants in return. He has the leverage here and can command what he wants. It is the Mets who have to budge.

Dec. 07: Minaya leaves meetings

Mets GM Omar Minaya left the winter meetings within the hour. He's headed to the Dominican Republic where he'll see Jose Reyes and scout sites for where the Mets plan to build a complex. There are no plans to meet with Pedro Martinez.

Before leaving, Minaya said:

* Nothing is imminent of a major nature. There could be tweakings the bench over the next few days.

* The door is still open with Barry Zito.

* The trade market is still a possibility, but he doesn't appear as enamored with that as he was at the start of the week. Oakland wants a lot for either Rich Harden, Danny Haren or Joe Blanton. All are young, good, and don't make a lot of money. Unless he gets a lot in return, there's no reason for Oakland to trade any of them. It's the Mets who must up the ante, and Minaya is reluctant.

* He thought the meetings were a success because he picked up Burgos and the groundwork is there for further discussions.

Dec. 07: Wanted Garcia

Before leaving, Omar Minaya said he was disappointed not to get Freddy Garcia, who was traded by the White Sox to Philly late Wednesday night.

The Mets could still talk to Chicago about Javier Vazquez, but nothing is imminent there.

Something to consider: If the Mets were picky as to who they would give up for Garcia, then they figure to be even more prudent when it comes to Rich Harden, who has an injury history and hasn't been as productive.

Dec. 07: Mets in the Morning

Morning all ...

Thanks for your many responses over the past few days. Meetings are breaking up today. Omar Minaya will leave right after the Rule 5 Draft. I'll be heading to the airport soon after he leaves.

Freddy Garcia to the Phillies last night was a stunner. Was having dinner with a Philly writer when he got the call around 10. It makes the Phillies stronger and takes away a potential arm from the Mets. It also means the Sox are less likely to deal another starter.

If the Mets leave today without doing anything else, Minaya said he's happy. He got a power arm for his bullpen and laid the groundwork for further talks. He's still keeping tabs with Scott Boras about Barry Zito. He's also talking to Oakland about getting one of its starters. Harden, Haren or Blanton. Late last night I heard more Haren than Harden. The packages offered will vary by player.

Time to check out the draft. Will check back with you later.

Dec. 06: The price for Harden

I've been hearing the Mets have to give up something to get a guy like Rich Harden. He left us for dinner and meetings, one with Oakland, where of course, what we've been talking about all day will be discussed.

Minaya said adding Ambiorix Burgos provides the flexibility to deal from his bullpen - and we're talking Aaron Heilman - if he wanted. Minaya said at the start of the meetings somebody always emerges in trade talks who wasn't thought to be on the market and evidently that somebody is Rich Harden.

I've heard more Harden than Blanton, and I've heard three players could get it done. I'm still thinking Lastings Milledge, Heilman and Phil Humber.

Minaya also said the groundwork was laid to continue trade talks after the meetings break tomorrow morning. If the Mets don't do anything else this winter, Minaya said he's satisfied with his staff, but that could just be posturing as to not appear over-eager in the eyes of the trade market to add something.

As far as Barry Zito is concerned, the Mets will continue to talk with agent Scott Boras.

Dec. 06: Mets, Oakland update

The Mets and Oakland are supposed to meet this afternoon. The more I think about it, the more I believe it is time to deal Aaron Heilman. Ambiorix Burgos enables them to trade Heilman, who clearly doesn't want to be with the Mets any longer. His decision is that he values starting over filling a role need. That's fine. It's his career.

Maybe he will make it as a starter, maybe he won't. But, he's not going to get that chance with the Mets. So, if they get the chance to pull the trigger on a trade for a starter they should pull it immediately.

Dec. 06: Mets hire HoJo as first base coach

Sorry for the delay in posts, but our blog server has been down for awhile. Rich Harden for Lastings Milledge straight up isn't going to happen.

You have to look at a potential deal from both perspectives, and with the Athletics losing Barry Zito, they aren't about to trade a good, young starter for a prospect outfielder with attitude problems.

Yes, the Mets are talking with Oakland, and yes, Harden's name has surfaced. So has Joe Blanton. However, if either comes to the Mets, they will have to give up a pitching in return, and I'm not talking about Aaron Heilman.

Milledge and Heilman would be for starters, but the Mets would have to include either Phil Humber or Mike Pelfrey.

Dec. 06: Analyzing the deal

There's several ways to look at the Burgos-Bannister deal:

* On the surface, Burgos' power arm has more value than Bannister. There's a greater upside there.

* With John Maine and Oliver Perez, Bannister would have been a fifth starter had he made the team, but that was far from a given. If the Mets pull off a deal for a starter, Bannister is in the minor leagues again. He's also in the minors if Mike Pelfrey has a great spring.

* Burgos will be slotted in the bullpen behind Duaner Sanchez and Aaron Heilman, making him a sixth-inning presence.

* Heilman could factor in a trade for a starter. He clearly doesn't want to stay in the bullpen. If the Mets have the opportunity to package him in a deal for a quality starter, they'll do it. You've heard the names Joe Blanton and Rich Harden from Oakland.

Dec. 06: Bonds in the house

Barry Bonds checked into the hotel early this morning. Does it mean we could have an announcement today by the Giants? I wouldn't bet on it. Agent Jeff Borris said he's here to talk to teams.

We shall see.

In the end, I still see Bonds re-upping with the Giants. He has too much baggage to move this late in his career.

Dec. 06: Done deal; Burgos for Bannister

It's official. The Mets just swung the deal for reliever Ambiorix Burgos, giving up Brian Bannister.

Ambiorix, 22, went 4-5 with a 5.52 ERA in 68 appearances last year for KC. He throws gas. GM Omar Minaya said his reports are the high 90s.

``He's a power arm and it is hard for me to give up on a power arm,'' Minaya said.

Bannister became expendable with the development of John Maine and Oliver Perez, and with the expected acquisition of another starting pitcher.

Nov. 06: Trade to be announced

Morning all ... It is being reported Julio Lugo just agreed to a four-year, $36-million contract with the Boston Red Sox. Can you imagine if he signed with the Mets for that?

I never liked him for the Mets in the first place. That's a lot to spend for mediocrity, and you can always get a player of his ability, and for a lot less.

If Lugo is worth that, then you have to ask yourself what's Jose Reyes worth? Certainly more than the $23.25 million the Mets signed him for this summer.

Dec. 05: Mets still talking

The Mets are still talking to the Royals about reliever Ambiorix Burgos. Seeking to improve their staff, both starting and relieving, the Mets are talking to Kansas City about a trade for hard-throwing reliever Ambiorix Burgos, 22, who was 4-5 with a 5.52 ERA last season in 73 1/3 innings. Manager Willie Randolph expressed confidence in his bullpen earlier today despite losing Chad Bradford, Roberto Hernandez and the uncertainty of Duaner Sanchez's comeback from shoulder surgery.

GM Omar Minaya also spent a good part of the day talking to teams about a starting pitcher. The Mets have dealt with the Baltimore before, which is why their discussions for Rodrigo Lopez should be taken seriously.

Dec. 05: Minaya confident about deal

Just finished meeting with Omar Minaya, and then agent Scott Boras, about Barry Zito. The Mets have not made an offer, but talked parameters on the length of the contract. Boras wants six, but Minaya wouldn't say where he's at. Presumably, it is lower.

Minaya also said he's confident of making a deal before the meetings break up. He didn't rule out the possibility of something happening tonight. ``I feel confident about some things,'' Minaya said.

Depending on whom the Mets get back, they could still entertain Zito thoughts. However, trading for a high end starter and then adding a high end free agent are unlikely.

Boras said the two sides would continue to talk. He said the market for Zito is more than just the Mets and Texas, and that he has offers on the table.

Dec. 05: Mets talking trade for pitching

Omar Minaya has been busy today, and has talked with three teams about pitching. GM Omar Minaya said yesterday the Mets are pretty well set position player wise, but now I learn they are still talking to Julio Lugo. One media outlet reported the numbers at $36 million over four years.

Why?

Lugo hit .278 with 12 homers and 37 RBI last season while making $4.95 million. He's a lifetime .277 hitter.

I'm not sure what the attraction is. If they did because they aren't satisfied with Jose Valentin, or think he can't repeat last season, then why did they bother to re-sign him?

I don't think Lugo is worth the money. Mark Loretta could be a better option for next year, and surely, somebody else equally as mediocre as Lugo will surface next winter.

One scout told me Lugo ``is a gamer, but not a game breaker.'' There's a big difference. That's a lot of money for a No. 8 hitter who's no great shakes in the field, either.

Every year the market is flooded with players who are as good as Lugo, if not better. There's no reason to tie up that much money over the next four years.

Dec. 05: Rangers up Zito ante

The free-agent pitching market is tissue paper thin, yet there's a 15-game winner out there whose name hasn't been mentioned all winter.

Steve Trachsel.

Doesn't that give you an indication of the feeling of how he pitched? Trachsel pitched poorly in his two playoff starts, but before that the feeling was he benefited from getting six runs a game in support, which masked the effectiveness of all those wins.

Still, before it is over, somebody will bite, but no, it won't be the Mets.

Dec. 05: Boras at his best

Scott Boras has a reputation for getting the most for his client. He's the elite agent that represents Barry Zito, the biggest fish in the free-agent pond, as well as Greg Maddux. The number on the table for Zito is already $102 million, with all probability the number coming out of the agent's camp.

It's not what he'll get for Zito that makes Boras so valuable, but what he'll get for Maddux.

Last night came the report Maddux was about to sign with the Padres, who play in the town the pitcher lives. The Dodgers were seemingly out of it and he wasn't going back to Chicago. Maddux wants to stay on the West Coast, but there didn't appear interest from the Giants, Angels, Athletics or Mariners. Still, the lobby buzz is that there's a ``mystery team'' that has surfaced in the last minute. So, the Padres' deal isn't done, yet.

The intent of this ``mystery team,'' is to extract more from the Padres, either in terms of money or an option year. Boras did the same thing in the 1998 offseason during the Bernie Williams negotiations. It was Yankees or Red Sox, but somehow another team surfaced.

It will be that way with Zito, too. It's not going to be just Texas and the Mets. Somebody else will surface. Mark my words.

Dec. 05: Randolph holds court

If Willie Randolph had one thing to say to free agent Barry Zito it would be this: ``We have a good thing going here and would like you to be a part of it.'' Not surprisingly, Randolph named starting pitching as his primary concern.

Among other things, Randolph said:

* He has confidence in his bullpen and the team still wants to bring back Guillermo Mota.
* Talks are on-going with his agent Ron Shapiro, on a contract extension.
* As of now Jose Valentin and Shawn Green go into spring training as the second baseman and right fielder, but ``nothing is etched in stone.''
* The plan is to move coach Sandy Alomar from first to third and hire a new first base coach.
* He has not lost confidence in Lastings Milledge and that he felt he was over scrutinized last year.
* He's a little disappointed in not being named NL Manager of the Year.

Dec. 05: Noontime buzz

The Padres were interested in Manny Ramirez until they learned the Red Sox wanted Jake Peavy. By his own admission, Cal Ripken admits to dodging the issue when asked about Mark McGwire possibly joining him on the Hall of Fame podium, but conceded steroids give a skewed perception of a player's numbers.

If a player plays his entire career using steroids, ``all numbers produced are artificial numbers,'' Ripken said. In the case of McGwire, whose physical presence clearly changed from the start to the end of his career, it's hard to tell when to start to judge. Ripken admits to being naive or ignorant about steroid use, but maybe he's trying to be political.

``I'm curious, but I don't feel I'm in a position to judge,'' Ripken said. ``I, personally, sit back and don't want to be drawn into that. I'm not personally qualified.''

Ripken did not specifically mention McGwire, or any other player - one of which was former teammate Rafael Palmeiro - linked to steroids.

I wish he would have. Just like I wish Derek Jeter and other big name stars would speak out against it. I understand the mentality of the player fraternity, but it is the reputation of their game that is at stake and I'd like for them to protect it more. Instead, Ripken said: ``History will judge us all. Whether it is now or 50 years from now, the truth will come out.''

Ripken said he's not personally qualified, but he's wrong. The essence of his record streak was showing up for work under all conditions and playing when there were times he would rather not.

Part of the essence of steroid use is allowing the athlete to perform when he's not always physically able. If anybody is able to talk about the purity of playing it would be Ripken.

Dec. 05: Mets figure to pay dearly for pitching

With the bare bones pitching market, GM Omar Minaya will have to think twice about those spending parameters and hope his staff is right about all those young arms. Minaya admitted there's some age to his team - Tom Glavine, Orlando Hernandez and several position players - which means there's a closing window of opportunity.

If guys like Gil Meche, Ted Lilly and Vicente Padilla are getting $10 million-plus a year, and we're not talking anything great here, then there's no doubt Barry Zito will get a lot more. You also have to understand that Zito, while the best available now, is four years removed from his best season.

That's a gamble. However, one thing working in the Mets' favor should they plunge for Zito is in two years they'll move into their new cash-cow stadium, where the naming rights should cover them.

Dec. 05: Mets in the Morning

Omar Minaya will talk with a number of agents today, with presumably one of them Scott Boras about Barry Zito. They talked late last night, but the Mets have not made an offer.

They still haven't talked to Gil Meche's agent, but if they are interested they'd better act because word is he's been targeted by Toronto. The Cubs, with his former manager, Lou Piniella, is also in the mix.

MLB managers will be made available. We get Willie Randolph this afternoon. Will need to catch up with him on his contract extension. Minaya said yesterday there's no rush, but after the season he said he wanted to get it done this winter.

Dec. 04: Mets done for the night

Not that they did anything today anyway, but the Mets say they are shutting it down for the night. Willie Randolph is in the lobby schmoozing, and the last I saw of Omar Minaya is that he was hanging with Tommy Lasorda.

Randolph will hold court tomorrow when the managers are made available. That will be a chance to ask him about his contract. Minaya said there's no rush, but I wonder what Randolph thinks about that.

One last news nugget before calling it a night, is that Giants GM Brian Sabean said the team is interested in Barry Bonds. He said there was a perception they weren't because they were involved in other business. Like trying to sign Alfonso Soriano or Carlos Lee, and trade for Manny Ramirez. Those guys, incidentally, play left field. Same position as Bonds, I think.

Dec. 04: Pitching rumblings

The Rangers, who are frontrunners for free-agent left-hander Barry Zito, have agreed to terms with their own free agent, Vicente Padilla on a three-year, $34-million package. Meanwhile, the Padres are close to signing Greg Maddux, who has a home in the San Diego area.

Padilla was linked to the Mets, but Texas had the inside track all along.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are close to signing former Yankee lefthander Ted Lilly. We're talking $9 million to $11 million a season as the speculated numbers.

Also, if the Mets are interested in Gil Meche, they'd better hurry. He appears headed to Toronto. The Red Sox tried to move Manny Ramirez to the Mets before, but not this time. They are speaking to several West Coast teams, but the asking price is steep and no deal is close.

The Dodgers' top six prospects are Jonathan Broxton (the closer to replace Eric Gagne), outfielder Matt Kemp, first baseman James Loney, third baseman Andy LaRoche, pitcher Chad Billingsley and lefthander Scott Elbert. The Red Sox want Broxton, Kemp and one of the remaining four. That's a huge part of their farm system.

If the Dodgers bite, then they'll have to pay Ramirez $19 million for each of the next two years. The club would have options in the following two seasons.

Dodgers manager Grady Little had Ramirez in Boston and said: ``I know how to handle Manny Ramirez. I respect him as a player and he was a marvelous ballplayer in Boston. There aren't many like him and the Dodgers need a player of his stature.''

Maybe so, but the money doesn't come out of Little's pocket. The Dodgers also have to consider their ability to build if they give up those prospects and how Ramirez's contract might bind them.

There also doesn't appear to be a fit with San Diego or San Francisco. Few teams have the resources to acquire Ramirez, which is why he'll likely stay in Boston.

Dec. 04: Reds' Butcher honored

Rob Butcher is one of the real good guys who works in professional baseball. He was honored today with the Robert O. Fishel Award for excellence in public relations.

Butcher has been at it for 18 years, the last 10 with the Cincinnati Reds. His career began in 1988 with the Yankees' Class AAA Columbus affiliate, and five years later he was in New York.

He's one of the guys who helped in my transition into covering the National League. I called him last winter and he gave me the lay of the land on my new league and was exceedingly helpful all year.

Considering all the teams needing pitching, one would think Jason Schmidt's name would be mentioned more prominently. There's a few reasons why it hasn't, yet:

* Dollar slotting: The premier pitcher on the FA market is Barry Zito, and now that six-years at $102 million is on the table we will have a better idea where Schmidt could fit in. It's a lot like the first round of the NFL draft. Part of that slotting took place yesterday when the Cardinals signed Chris Carpenter to a five-year, $65-million extension.

* Priorities: Supposedly, the Dodgers are players for Schmidt, but currently their attention is on Manny Ramirez. (The Red Sox are asking for a lot, so that talk might fade sooner than one might think).

The Mets will consider Schmidt, who prefers staying on the West Coast. Of course, geographical preferences could change depending on what develops in the market.

Dec. 04: Mets to meet with Boras

Just finished session with Mets GM Omar Minaya, who said he'll meet with agent Scott Boras this week regarding FA lefty Barry Zito. Reportedly, Zito has offer of $102 milliion over six years. Minaya said Mets have the ability to add payroll, but haven't determined their parameters.

The meeting with Boras will be informational. ``Scott will have a lot of statistics saying how great his player is,'' Minaya said. An offer, if it comes, will come after the reports are digested. Minaya said the trade market for pitching is cool right now, with those teams that have pitchers to deal waiting to see how the market shakes out.

Again, Minaya said pitching is a priority, and if a starter isn't added he would be content going into spring training with what he has. I think he's playing his cards close to the vest and tempering his interest in Zito. No sense showing urgency that would drive up the price.

Among other things, Minaya also said:

* He's reviewing a list of relievers also, and said the market is pricey.
* Negotiations on manager Willie Randolph's contract extension are on-going.
* There's no overwhelming need to add position players.
* He's still considering reliever Guillermo Mota.

Dec. 04: Scan the list

I wanted re-post the list of remaining free-agents. The more people I speak with, the more I get the impression Barry Bonds will stay with San Francisco. He just has too much baggage to go anywhere else.

First of all, any team signing him will have to answer the question: Why?

Then, there's the circus that comes with him and the concern of how he'll poison the waters in any clubhouse. The Giants have put up with him for years and know the score.

Bonds has also been linked to Oakland, which is interested in acquiring Mike Piazza and Cliff Floyd. That won't exactly offset losing Barry Zito.

Dec. 04: Mariners shopping Sexson; Meche on the market

Word is the Mariners are shopping slugging first baseman Richie Sexson, obviously a bargain at $14 million. Of the two New York teams, I would think he's probably more a fit for the Yankees than the Mets, that is, of course, if Jason Giambi becomes the full-time DH. Seattle signed outfielder Jose Guillen to a one-year, $5.5 million contract. The Mariners will be Guillen's eighth team of his career. Nothing like stability.

Seattle could lose pitcher Gil Meche, who is seeking a four-year, $36-million contract. The Mets are expected to talk to him, but early speculation has him going to either the Cubs, where he will be reunited with manager Lou Piniella, or Toronto. With the Mets he would be a No. 3 starter. Meche was 11-8 with a 4.48 ERA in 32 starts last season, throwing 186 2/3 innings.

Dec. 04: Reds, Giants making early news

ESPN is reporting reliever David Weathers is close to signing a two-year deal with Cincinnati, and infielder Rich Aurilia reached agreement with the Giants on a two-year, $8-million contract with the Giants.

Neither player was of interest to the New York teams.

Dec. 04: Glavine-Maddux II not likely

Sure, it's a sexy thought, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux reunited. It won't happen. Maddux wants no part of New York, or the rest of the East Coast for that matter. Health questions scuttled Joe Borowski's two-year deal with the Phillies, but they are now talking about one year. Of course, that begs the question: Don't the same questions exist over one year?

It's not a given the Cardinals will bring back Jeff Weaver, but after how he was treated in New York while with the Yankees, it's doubtful he would consider a return, even if it were to the Mets.

Dec. 04: Bonds market dry for now

You can understand Jeff Borris saying it, afterall, he has to protect his client. However, Barry Bonds' agent overstated it the other night when he said, ``I think, for the last 14 years, they've taken him for granted ... and they're taking him for granted now.''

For the past 14 years, Bonds has had pretty much free reign in San Francisco to do what he wants, when he wants, and to hell with everybody else. C'mon, that he's cheated is only a glimpse into his arrogance.

The Giants have gone after Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee, and are making a run at Manny Ramirez. It's clear indication bringing Bonds back isn't Priority One.

Privately, don't you know MLB hopes Bonds goes unsigned and is forced to retire? I'm thinking before it's over, Bonds will end up back with the Giants, who are used to the headache he provides.
